Raise the Wage Burien Fundraiser

Wednesday, May 1st, 2024

  • Join us on International Workers’ Day — Wednesday, May 1st, 5:30-7:00pm — to raise funds to help raise Burien’s minimum wage! We’ll be joined by special guests from the Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness who will share information about why they and three Burien residents without homes are suing to overturn Burien’s anti-homeless banishment ordinance. They’ll talk about the situation for folks living outside and what Burien residents and others are doing and can do to help people get housing, shelter, and services that work.

This is a house party with limited space, so RSVP below to reserve your spot. Suggested minimum donation $75. We’ll provide the refreshments!

Burien politics are… kind of a hot mess. The city council has been making harmful decisions that we don’t believe reflect the will or values of a majority of their constituents.

Last year, our coalition of Burien residents, workers, community groups and labor unions urged the city council to raise the minimum wage to match nearby jurisdictions like Tukwila and Renton. Instead, a slim majority of the council worked with business interests to pass a weak law with extreme carve-outs that won’t raise wages for almost any real-life Burien workers. We can’t let this bad precedent stand, so we’re gathering signatures for an initiative that would replace the council's ordinance. But we’re on a tight timeline and we need your help! Come learn more and contribute to help Burien workers win a living wage.

If you’ve been reading the news, you know that’s not all the Burien City Council has been up to. Two months after the Coalition on Homelessness joined three Burien residents without homes to file a lawsuit to overturn a cruel, unjust, and unconstitutional law that tries to make people strangers in their own town, the council amended that law to make it even worse. In quick succession The Seattle Times Editorial Board opined against it (wow!) and King County Sheriff Cole-Tindall, concerned about whether the law was constitutional, instructed deputies (who serve as Burien’s police force under a contract) not to enforce it until a federal judge rules on its constitutionality. The Sheriff has also sued Burien, which has now counter-sued King County. Special guests from the Coalition on Homelessness will join us to share their inside perspective on the most recent developments.

We have limited space at this event, so register today to reserve your spot. Suggested minimum donation is $75. You can make a contribution to Raise the Wage Burien now and/or at the event. If you prefer to donate to TRU to support our work on this campaign, that works too.

Location is in Beacon Hill and accessible by bus and bike; it is a house and there are some stairs to enter. Doors open at 5:30pm, program will start at 6:15pm. RSVP for details:
